Alumni Spotlight: Jessica Smith, New World School Of The Arts ’18
Check out our Q & A with HIP Alumni, Jessica Smith, New World School of the Arts ’18 & current University of Florida student:
How has HIP impacted you?
HIP has impacted my life in so many ways. When I first began to learn about the important topics taught by HIP PHEs in my 9th grade social studies class, I began to see the impact of this program and how important it is to educate students on topics pertaining to their health and well-being. I gained a passion for learning more about these topics and educating others as a PHE and the President of HIP at my school. I continued to educate people as I entered college, serving as my sorority’s risk manager. The programs I planned to educate my sisters were largely inspired by HIP.
Why are you involved in HIP as an alumni?
I am involved with HIP as an alumni because this program connects likeminded individuals, and these connections shouldn’t end in high school. I loved the idea of helping to build a community of HIP alumni and to continue to connect with individuals who participated in this program like I did.
Why is it important to have HIP in schools?
It is so important to have HIP in schools, as these important topics are relevant throughout our lives. With budget and curriculum cuts across the country, it is incredible that HIP offers an avenue for students to continue to learn and educate themselves.
What did you learn from HIP and how do you use that today in your school/work life?
I learned a lot from HIP – I learned the importance of education regarding our health. Additionally, this organization truly taught me what it means to be a leader. I have gained skills that have served me well in college, and for that, I am so grateful.
